Am I right to conclude that the micrometer is for precise positioning and the distance is not important? I'm intrigued by the notion that the number of "Pair" channels created is arbitrary. One or several of the channels exist in parallel accounting for the discreet step resistances produced. I hope I'm getting this. The Hg filament may be a little hard to see.

Richard; The number of channels is apparently a function of the nano-wire dimensions.
Since this changes each time it is formed one cannot predict the number of pairs formed.
